When it comes to food, Cape Town is the ultimate foodie place to be featuring cuisines from all over the world. The variety served is truly impressive. But, with so many restaurants it can get hard to make a choice on where to eat. Below an overview of my 5 top picks in Cape Town ranging from fine dining to local experiences.

5 Restaurants to Try in Cape Town – From Local to Fine Dining

Food in Cape Town

1) A Local Experience at The Meeting Point

When I say local, I don’t mean the tourist type of African food local, if you get what I mean 😉 I ask myself the question, where do the locals go and eat? Since Cape Town by night might not be the safest option for 2 blond women travellers, it’s best to ask a local person to take you around. We had the pleasure to discover Cape Town by night through the eye of a local with our tour guide Mateus Pereira Jeremias. He took us out during his after hours when our tour was long over, how kind! He called his wife during our day trip in the car and said: “I need to take these ladies out for a true local dinner, I’ll be home late tonight. They cannot leave Africa without having a good taste of Africa”. Matteus became a friend and our big brother in Africa giving us the foodie experience of a lifetime! We tried all kinds of beautiful home cooked African food and even ate with our hands. The place is called the Meeting Point serving all kinds of African dishes from the season. And YES, only the locals eat here 😉

If you want to have a true local foodie experience in Cape Town, I suggest you give Mateus Pereira Jeremias a call on WhatsApp +27 82 086 6928. He loves to show the best of South Africa to people from all around the world, his true passion. He will not just be your tour guide but also your friend for life. Enjoy!

2) Fine Dining at Vida Nova Retreat – The Green Orchid Restaurant

If you are looking for African style fine dining with a healthy touch, the restaurant at the Vida Nova Retreat, The Green Orchid, in Hout Bay is the place to be. They are specialised in serving a plant-based menu and source local fresh products from the season. The diversity of flavours they bring in each dish is excellent and the interior design of the place is modern and welcoming. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We had the pleasure to eat at The Green Orchid on our last night in Cape Town ending our trip in style with a lovely, home-cooked, fine dinner.

3) Dinner, Cocktails and Italian fine dining with a sunset view at Zenzero

A lovely Italian fine dining restaurant overlooking the beautiful Camps Bay. Perfect for some great Italian food in style, an apero with home made cocktails or just to watch the sunset. Their interior design is beautiful also making it a great place for dinner if you are visiting Cape Town in Winter.

We had the pleasure to eat here on our first day in Cape Town after a lovely tour around the peninsula. It was great to end a full day touring with some nice Italian food, delicious cocktails and a beautiful sunset. Highly recommend.

4) Amazing brunch and breakfast overlooking Camps Bay at Surfhack

If you want to start your day fresh, ensure to have a lovely breakfast or brunch at the Surfhack in Camps Bay. Make sure you are hungry because they serve lots of delicious food from avocado toast, fresh fruit salads, oatmeal bowls and grilled eggs. We couldn’t even finish it all! You have a lovely view over Camps Bay while sipping on your morning coffee or tea. Their interior is very bohemian and the staff is extremely welcoming, making it an excellent place to soak in the beach side while waking up to start your day.

5) Have some freshly grilled Catch of the day at Live Bait in Kalkbay

When visiting sea side places, you cannot leave without having a good catch of the day. Some local fishes you might find are tuna, yellow tail, snoek or swordfish. They also serve fresh sushis that are an excellent choice to share as a starter while enjoying some grilled local fish for the main course. They also serve fish platters that you can share with family and friends. The place is located in the area of Kalkbay very close to Boulders Bay where you can meet with the colony of Pinguins. A great place to have some excellent lunch during a full day tour of the Cape Town Peninsula.
